003 - Albion Renovation
Project Location: Brunswick, Melbourne, VIC
Project Type: Sustainable House Renovation
Status: Build Permit Phase
The Albion Renovation is a sustainable house renovation project located in Brunswick, Melbourne, within the Merri-bek Council. Nestled in an industrial zone that is transitioning into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood, this project seamlessly blends the site’s industrial heritage with contemporary residential design.
The property, sitting on a compact 171 sqm site with a 5.21m frontage, has been residentially used for over 15 years. The renovation honours this legacy while meeting modern needs and adhering to planning regulations in Industrial Zone 1 (IN1Z).
Though not required to meet Clauses 54 and 55, the design uses these as guiding principles to ensure best practice in urban infill development. The extension strategically enhances natural daylight access through north-facing bifold doors and polycarbonate roofing, fostering bright and welcoming living spaces while maintaining privacy and minimising impacts on neighbours.
The Albion Renovation exemplifies the future of urban residential design in Melbourne, merging sustainability, functionality, and architectural sensitivity.
Key design highlights include:
Atmospheric interiors enhanced by polycarbonate materials that diffuse natural light
Energy-efficient design principles improving thermal comfort year-round
Respect for the evolving urban context by merging industrial aesthetics with modern functionality
A wider, light-filled living area that opens onto the backyard, fulfilling the client’s vision
“We want a wider light-filled living area opening up to the backyard”. Andrew Dorn
